George Peabody Library PDF Print E-mail
One of Baltimore's hidden treasures has reopened to the public after a 2-year restoration. The library, part of the Peabody Institute, is an architectural gem set into the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood that is also home to the Walters Art Museum and the Washington Monument. It's an academic gem as well -- the resting place of 300,000 volumes, mostly rare books, with some dating back to the days when the printing press was new

Philanthropist George Peabody provided the funds to build this magnificent "cathedral of books" and ordered that it be filled with the best works on every subject. Bibliophiles and lovers of architecture won't want to miss seeing this 1866 beauty. It's open all day to readers, but visitors who just want to see the cast-iron balconies, which soar five levels to a shining glass ceiling, are advised to stop by at 10am or 3pm (though they won't be turned away at other times).
